‘Succession’ scribe to write Harry Potter TV series

Mark Mylod and Francesca Gardiner

HBO has confirmed that the new television adaptation of the Harry Potter books will see Succession duo Mark Mylod and Francesca Gardiner at the helm as director and writer.

News of the upcoming TV version of J.K. Rowling’s book series was first confirmed by HBO Max last April, with each of the seven books reportedly getting its own season.

Although details of the cast are still unconfirmed, HBO recently named Gardiner, whose credits include Killing Eve, His Dark Materials and Succession, as showrunner and executive producer.

Mylod, who also worked on Succession as well as Game of Thrones and The Last of Us, will act as executive producer and director of multiple episodes in the series.

The series, which is currently in development, is said to be a “faithful” adaptation of Rowling’s books, complete with a new cast.

Harry Potter alumni Daniel Radcliffe, who starred in the eight-film series from 2001 to 2011, has already clarified he doesn’t want to cameo in the new TV series, saying: “I don’t know if it would work to have us do anything in it.”

In 2020, the Imperium actor wrote an essay in which he challenged Rowling’s views following a series of controversial posts on X/Twitter.

After Rowling wrote: “I know and love trans people, but erasing the concept of sex removes the ability of many to meaningfully discuss their lives. It isn’t hate to speak the truth,” Radcliffe spoke out to say: “Transgender women are women,” and that “any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people.”

When asked by E! if he’d been approached by HBO to be part of the upcoming project, Radcliffe said: “I’m going to be a politician about this and not deal in hypotheticals.”

Elsewhere, he opened up about the loss of the late Alan Rickman, admitting he was “terrified” of him when they first met, but sharing much the Love Actually star supported him throughout his career.
