Since January 7, wildfires have erupted and spread across the Los Angeles metropolitan area – causing widespread damage, particularly in the Pacific Palisades and Altadena. Many have been forced to evacuate while various fire departments and volunteers try to keep the blaze under control.
At the time of writing, the notorious LA Fires have taken at least 24 lives, damaged over 12,401 structures, and forced nearly 180,000 people to evacuate their homes.
Born and raised in LA, rapper The Game – real name Jayceon Taylor – shared photos and videos of him with the Pasadena Fire Department, explaining in a Instagram video that he was giving out “blankets, pillows, coffees, bananas, waters – just anything we can give out to help these firemen out here.”
In a later video post, Taylor declared: “It’s just a time where everybody needs everybody. It’s one of those times in America where everybody just needs to hone in on what’s going on out here and do everything that you can to help.”
He then penned a message about his experience with “the good people” on the ground fighting the destructive wildfires: “Me [and] my team have been down here with the brave men [and] women firefighters on the grown day in [and] day out, assisting [in] any way I can to make their days a little easier. The hearts [and] level of humility in each [and] every soul down here is a beautiful thing to witness [and] be a part of.
“These fighters are coming from all over the city, state [and] country to help put an end to what has been a long week of catastrophic events caused by these fires. They kept thanking me for being here and – in my mind – I’m like, “No, THANK YOU!!!” for doing the unimaginable in a time of pure terror [and] despair.”
He concluded the caption by saying: “My heart goes out to each [and] every person directly affected [and] those watching from all over the world who are mentally in pieces over what has happened in my city. I am here for Los Angeles [and] I will always be here to do my part.”
The Game is among many musicians who have helped out with the aftermath of the fires. Beyoncé’s BeyGOOD foundation have donated $2.5million to help to relief efforts for the Los Angeles wildfires. Paris Hilton also launched a fund for families displaced by the fires, pledging $100,000 and promised to match up to $100,000 in donations. Dave Grohl also spent his birthday making meals for families that had been effected.
American-Mexican band Fuerza Regida have rented out an entire hotel for a week to shelter 50 families fleeing the wildfires.
Charli XCX called for brands gifting her clothes to “give [them] to people who really truly need it.” She then shared details of a clothing drive organised by stylist Lana Jay Lackey, urging others to join her in donating.
Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish and more have reacted to the “heart-wrenching” devastation caused by the wildfires, sharing resource links for those in need of help.
In other Los Angeles wildfires-related news, a benefit concert for the victims – dubbed FireAid – has been announced. It will take place at the Intuit Dome on January 30 with the proceeds going towards the rebuild program and to displaced families. No one has been confirmed for the line-up yet.
Guitar Center has also announced a new program that will help musicians affected by the Los Angeles wildfires replace their instruments or gear. This week, it was reported that over 1,000 people in the music community were being supported by MusiCares – the not-for-profit arm of The Grammys and Recording Academy – amid the wildfires.
The charity said scores of people had been in touch since they launched their “Fire Relief Effort” last week. Speaking to NME, Theresa Wolters from the organisation, said: “What’s been shocking to me, going through the contact we’ve had, is just the number of people who have lost everything.”
The Pacific Palisades blaze, one of a number of fires that continues to burn, covers almost 20,000 acres – a geographic area approximately 20 times the size of the Glastonbury festival site.
Members of the LA music community have also spoken to NME about being hit hard, with a number of venues, studios and artists being affected by the blaze.
Among those to lose their homes include the artists Jhené Aiko, Madlib, Diane Warren, Harry Mack, Iron Maiden guitarist Adrian Smith, Tim Darcy of the Canadian rock groups Cola and Ought, pop duo Brijean, 30 Seconds To Mars guitarist and musical director Stevie Aiello, and Beyonce‘s mother Tina Knowles.
