While the heist initially appears to be the work of violent thugs, with help from Zara (Sophie Turner) and Luke (Archie Madekwe), we discover there’s far more powerful forces at play. The actual mastermind behind the theft is Darren Yoshida (Andrew Koji), the financial investigator helping police with the case.

Darren hired the thieves and arranged his schedule so he’d be assigned to the case, allowing him to keep an eye on proceedings. As for his motivations, Darren wanted to “change the world” by exposing the corrupt financial systems which leave millions struggling everyday, as the rich relish in luxury via money in offshore bank accounts.

Who else was involved in the heist along with Luke and Zara?

While orchestrated by Darren and his hired thieves, the heist was an inside job as well. Luke was drafted into the plan because he had credit card debt to pay off, while Zara was convinced to take part by Luke due to the dissatisfaction with her job, along with her life generally.

However, there was another Lochmill employee involved in the heist. Milo (Harry Michell), a senior risk analyst at the company who wanted to retire early, was contacted by the thieves online and he directed them to Luke in the first place.

Zara and Luke survive a dramatic shoot-out at the office, and realise Darren is the secret mastermind behind the whole operation. Zara and Rhys (Jacob Fortune-Lloyd) confront him at the Lochmill office, and Darren makes a final offer to try and buy his escape: they can have another crypto wallet with £10 million stolen from tax haven accounts, if they let him go. Zara, however, turns it down, so there’s no ties between them.

Steal ends, however, with another twist. Zara had hidden Milo’s crypto wallet with a clean £20 million in a box of office supplies, hoping it wouldn’t be collected by police after they searched the area. The gamble paid off, and with Milo dead, they’re free to take the money and spend it however they like. In the last shot, we see Zara and Rhys walk off together with the cash.
