The creators of Stranger Things have said they are willing to reveal what really happened to Eleven at the end of the series – providing fans are willing to wait 20 years.
Spoilers ahead for the season 5 finale of Stranger Things.
Premiering in 2016, the show became an immediate hit on Netflix and came to an end at the end of 2025, with its two-hour season five finale airing on New Year’s Eve.
The last episode saw the heroic group of friends, Mike, Dustin, Max, Steve and the rest,
come together one final time to defeat the evil Vecna. By the time the final credits rolled, however, there was still uncertainty about what happened to central character Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown).
Writers for the show deliberately crafted an ambiguous ending for the character, and it isn’t clear whether or not she did in fact sacrifice herself to save her friends. Even the other characters had doubts about whether or not she died at the end of the show, and eventually chose to have hope that she was still out there somewhere, keeping a low profile.
Now, months after the series ended, fans are continuing to deliberate what might have actually happened to Eleven – and series creators Matt and Ross Duffer have revealed that they are willing to clarify her official fate… but not anytime soon.
Speaking on Josh Horowitz’s Happy, Sad, Confused podcast, the Duffer brothers said that they will wait 20 years to confirm what the ending was.
When asked when fans can expect closure, Ross Duffer quipped: “If we’re talking to you in 20 years about Stranger Things, [then] in 20 years.”
“I mean, I hope so. I hope people still care [by 2046],” he added. “That would be great, and then I’ll say everything, yeah. At that point, 20 years from now.”
Horowitz jokingly agreed to the plan, adding: “20 years from now, it’s a date. An exclusive on Happy, Sad, Confused – if I’m still alive.”
Elsewhere in the interview, the Duffers continued to skirt around revealing Eleven’s fate, acknowledging that some fans have interpreted the strange heartbeat-like sound at the very end of the show as symbolising that the character is still alive.
“It is written in the script that it is supposed to sound like a heartbeat, but it’s actually just […] distorted,” Matt Duffer said. “But yeah, you could interpret it as that. I mean, it was meant to be interpreted as that, potentially.”
Matt and Ross Duffer also revealed that they were caught off guard to discover that some cast members had said after the show ended that they didn’t believe that Eleven survived.
“They have never said that to me,” Matt said, referring to the comments made by cast members including Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin) and Sadie Sink (Max).
“I gotta talk to them. I’m not saying they’re wrong. It’s just interesting that they all concluded that without talking to us, because that’s not what the characters believe. I mean, they’re good actors, so I don’t know what’s going on.”
There were generally mixed reviews of the final episode, with some fans left disappointed by the ambiguous ending, and others left convinced that a surprise final ninth episode was in the works to wrap up the loose ends.
The final episode also made waves musically, with streams of Prince’s ‘Purple Rain’ and ‘When Doves Cry’ more than doubling on Spotify after their inclusion in the last episode. Iron Maiden also celebrated their track ‘The Trooper’ being featured, while David Bowie’s ‘Heroes’ also saw a huge streaming surge.
There are two spinoff series currently in the works in the Stranger Things universe. One is a live-action show that the Duffer brothers have had in the works since 2023, and is set to explore “new characters and a new mythology”, but without the characters from the main show. The other is a separate animated spinoff, titled Stranger Things: Tales From ‘85, which launched in April.
Elsewhere, the complete Stranger Things collection will be released on physical media for the first time in July, and fans of the show can hear the music from the show performed as part of an immersive concert tour.
