NME’s latest star of The Cover, Kamal., has created an exclusive playlist to accompany the story’s launch – check it out below.

The rising British singer is on this week’s (July 20) edition of The Cover, a manifestation of NME’s commitment to supporting emerging talent across the globe on a weekly basis. Every week, an up-and-coming artist will feature on The Cover – you can read Kamal.’s profile here, written by Kyann-Sian Williams and featuring photography by Gabriella Drew.

Alongside his The Cover story, Kamal. has curated an exclusive playlist of tracks he would’ve loved to have penned. ‘Songs I Wish I Wrote’ includes selections from a wide range of artists, including Phoebe Bridgers, Frank Ocean and Norah Jones, among others. Listen to the full playlist on Spotify below and on Apple Music.

Across the last six years, Kamal. has distinguished himself with a hushed croon and pensive lyricism soundtracking life’s quieter moments. Since signing to boutique label Neighbourhood Recordings at just 16, the London artist has released sleeper hits like 2020’s ‘Blue’ and earned co-signs from the likes of Billie Eilish, Dave and Central Cee.

On his debut album ‘How The F*** Does Everybody Else Manage?’, released last week, Kamal. interrogates the world around him, such as the contradictions that pervade social media: “between the poor and rich people”, “between genocide in the world and influencers doing Get Ready With Me’s.” Trying to reconcile it all became the emotional engine behind the record, which features Dave, Natanya and Keaton Henson. “Trying to find a balance between [and] to find a sort of morality in that is really difficult,” Kamal. tells NME. “I was just asking questions about that because it felt like it was driving me nuts.”

Every year, NME produces 50 Cover stories, showcasing the future of music via in-depth profiles and exclusive photoshoots. Check out our coffee table book NME The Cover 2024-2025, which features the likes of Kneecap, Lola Young, Amaarae, LE SSERAFIM, Oklou and many more.
