The cinematographer on HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series has described filming the show as “brutal” due to the strict working schedules of its young cast.
Production on the new adaptation began at Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden last year, with the first season set to cover Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone. Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout and Arabella Stanton will lead the cast as Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger respectively.
Speaking recently to André Pilli on YouTube, cinematographer Adriano Goldman explained that the production has had to work around limits on how long its young actors are allowed to film, as well as their on-set education.
“You have to shoot really fast, and the faster you go, the more you compromise quality,” he said. “There’s no way around it, right? Obviously, we have a lot of resources, but it’s brutal.”
“The kids’ screen time is really brutal,” he continued. “So the methodology is very specific. You practically have to pre-shoot all the scenes while they’re in class.”
Goldman said the three lead actors can sometimes be available on set for only “an hour and a half”, adding: “It’s really hard; you shoot everything out of order, right, because of that kind of scheduling”
Warner Bros. was granted permission last year to operate a temporary school at Leavesden for the production’s child actors. It is expected to remain in place for a decade and will typically accommodate around 150 pupils, rising to as many as 600 during the filming of large crowd scenes.
Goldman’s comments follow HBO boss Casey Bloys acknowledging the difficulty of producing the series quickly enough to prevent its young cast visibly ageing between instalments.
“Our goal is to not have a huge gap, you know, especially because the kids are growing,” he said. “It’s not going to be annual; the show is too big and too massive. But… they’re writing season two now.”
The first Harry Potter trailer was shared in March and divided fans, with some praising its visual faithfulness to the original films and others questioning why the story needed to be adapted again.
Alongside the three young leads, the cast includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall and Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch.
The series is scheduled to premiere on HBO and HBO Max on Christmas Day (December 25).
It has also attracted backlash surrounding author and executive producer J.K. Rowling’s anti-trans views and public hostility towards the transgender community. Lithgow revealed that he considered quitting the production following criticism of his involvement, while Frost has spoken out against Rowling’s comments.
More recently, Essiedu revealed that he had received racist abuse and death threats following his casting.
“I think of how I felt as a kid,” he said. “I would imagine myself at Hogwarts on broomsticks, and the idea that a kid like me can see themselves represented in that world? That’s motivation to not be intimidated by someone saying they’d rather I died instead of doing work I’m going to be really proud of.”
